Emmelshausen (Municipality Hunsrück-Mittelrhein)

The railway runs from Boppard to Emmelshausen along the steepest stretch of railway north of the Alps, passing through five tunnels and crossing two viaducts. This part of the region is situated exactly between rivers Rhine and Moselle and really captivates visitors with its enchanting natural scenery. A hiking tour through the Ehrbach Gorge is an action-packed experience.

The gorge starts behind Rauschenmühle (mill), with pathways and bridges carved from the rock. Cliffs and steep slopes accompany hikers past Rauschenburg (castle), a castle ruin, to the Eckmühle (mill).

A Hunsrück-style farmhouse dating from 1660 now houses the Emmelshausen Agricultural History Museum, which contains some useful information about the agricultural development of the region. It is also home to a kitchen dating from 1900, a room for spinning yarn, and a house used only for baking, all of which help to provide an insight into the everyday life of farmers in a bygone era. The museum also showcases traditional handicrafts including broom making, basket weaving, and shoemaking.
